From the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility, a novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel — a beautifully transporting novel.

The mega-bestseller with more than 2 million readers, soon to be a major television series

“Perhaps the ultimate quarantine read . . . A Gentleman in Moscow is about the importance of community; the distance of a kind act; and resilience. It’s a manual for getting through the days to come.” — O, The Oprah Magazine

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

Beautifully written. A little slow in the beginning while I was getting used to the Author’s style. Some lines were so good that I re-read them multiple times. This should be part of school curriculum for kids to read in high school. Highly recommend.

The main character’s charm kept my interest from page one.

Another beautifully written story by Amor Towles. Having already read “Rules of Civility” I eagerly await his next novel.

What a wonderful story. I was transported.

I had a little trouble in the beginning staying engaged with the writing style. This turned out to be one of my favorite books. How one man could make the best of his circumstances. A great lesson in the age of Covid. Beautiful book

A beautiful novel. I didn’t want it to end.

Excellent book — couldn’t stop reading it.

Absolutely gorgeous writing set in a fascinating frame of a central time in Russian history. A top read.

Fantastic book

Contrived

Amazing read. Very well done.

One of the best books I’ve read! It is very well written, and you must follow the story closely in the beginning as the author gives a bit of background and history. Towles transitions beautifully between the past and present tying them both together into an intricate and endearing story. So glad that I read this….didn’t want it to end!!

Fantastically conceived and executed much like his previous book but a completely different story.

Felt the book dragged and did not develop interestingly enough for my preference.

Such gorgeous writing, beautiful story, what a treat!

I’m not sure if the book style of writing changes after a few chapters or what. But I read the sample chapters before buying and thought the book would be great and interesting. But the writing is so unnatural to read I can’t stay interested. Like reading the King James Bible or something. Just doesn’t flow for me. I can’t finish it so a waste of money for me.

Marvelous from intro to ending.

Wonderful

I could not make it past the first half of the book…

Best book I’ve read in years. Almost poetic; a beautiful cadence of heartwarming self sacrifice and masterful self-actualization. A must read for lovers of history and lamenters of those doomed to repeat its misfortunes.

I found this book to be amusing, thought provoking, intriguing, and a surprise over and over. I’ve recommended it repeatedly and will continue to do so!

Slow to start…but an excellent read. So much history. Very interesting. I might read it again!

A wonderful story that gives the perfect details to truly los yourself in. The friendships and family members built throughout thee novel were so touching and memorable. I hope to see this played out on the screen someday.

This is my favorite book. It’s an easy and pleasant read

I’ve never been as sad to come to the end of reading a book as I have with this one. It was an absolute delight and will be recalled from memory for what I hope will be a very long time. So many lessons to be garnered from this and a great appreciation for mastering the circumstances you find yourself in throughout life.

This book will go down in the annals of the finest historical fiction. As others mentioned, the seamless blend of narrative, history, characters, and of course human experience draw you in and do not let go. Literature at its finest. I was sad it had to end.

The language is superb; you live this story, and though you welcome the outcome, one feels a sense of loss when you have to leave these characters. Excellent.

Fabulous!

What an outstanding, compassionate and loving book. A representation of humanity at its finest hour.

A really delightful read.

Riveting! Humor, pathos, philosophy, intrigue — all woven into a brilliant storyline. Count Rostov is at the center of a cast of characters the reader grows to care for. But mostly, we care for Rostov whose humility only accentuates his nobility.

Every chapter is an adventure.

A pleasure to read. Beautiful use of language. I would have preferred better transitions to the passing of years And more details after the escapes.

Somewhat laborious read but enough philosophy to make it worth the effort.

In this day and age where so much speech is rude, crude and loud, this story was a wonderful treat — a reminder that we do have the option to deal with each other in a civil manner, even under difficult circumstances. A wonderful interweaving of history and fiction.

What a beautifully written story. It will be one of my favorites.

Outstanding. A witty, charming, funny story of perseverance, love and the power of the human spirit.

I loved this book. My only complaint is that it had to end. This is a very gifted author.

I started thinking that I would need a new book to read. Around page 200, I could not put the book down. I am assuming the gentleman at the end was the count, and the woman was Anna. A lot of big words but never the less a great read. Thank you for the great book.

An exquisite read! Literature at its best. If you love reading and love words do not miss this absorbing book.

Absolutely positively delightful!

I did not want it to end. So enchanting and interesting history. I want everyone to read this fine work. Wizardry with words phrases and visuals that every read can see.

Superb in all ways!

I’m going to re-Read this book again it was so good

This is a very enjoyable read, but for the ending? Many new words to absorb.

Simply Beautiful.

Love this novel. Not at all what I expected. The hotel and the people that inhabit it become an entire universe.

A pretentious and overly complex piece of garbage that I am glad I did not pay for. I could not even get through half of the sample without wanting to throw my iPad out the window, hoping to hit the author in the head.

This book is not as enjoyable and fun to read as The Rules of Civility, his first book, but it is a good read overall. It requires your strict attention, however, so do not buy if you are looking for a beach read: lots of foreign characters, plots, history, artifacts, philosophy, comedy, etc., and some things that are left unexplained. Towles is an intellectual so you will not get everything he says but his diversions and commentary are often enlightening. EAF III

The Gentleman from Moscow is simply a beautifully written novel. One that you will want to read over and over.
